It seems appropriate to kind of retrace our steps and share how we got here.
It all started out with a group at Homewood Church (in Moline, IL) called “The Refuge.” This was a large or small group (depending on the year) of usually young usually single adults that got together weekly. At one point, it was decided that Refuge should be more outward focused, rather than just a nice safe Christian social club.
We tried a lot of different things—from meeting offsite from the church, to hosting concerts, to planning “great” times of worship. Well, you could probably say that all this “trying” kind of flopped. We found ourselves spending more time toting sound equipment around than being a part of a community. Every great program we planned eventually consumed us to the point where we became slaves to it. Burned out, most people just left.
Then the idea of Relevant came about. What about making the program so much less important? What about creating a ministry where attendance in Room F3 on Sunday Nights was not even a requirement? What about not having to worry about finding a great worship team or lugging trucks of sound and video equipment around?
What if we start this thing and call it "Relevant"?
